Understanding tax deferral

This example, depicting two buckets of water shows the impact of having savings and investments within a taxable account versus a tax-deferred Jackson Retirement Investment Annuity. In the taxable account as assets grow the water rises, annual taxes cause leaks in the bucket. In the tax-deferred annuity bucket, as assets grow the water also rises. However, the leaks in the bucket disappear. Annual taxes on the investment earnings are like holes in the taxable account bucket. With a tax-deferred annuity, earnings received accumulate tax deferred, and plug the tax holes that drain asset growth.

A protected balance that grows with your investments

The chart represents how the +Protect add-on living benefit works. For example, if at age 65 the Jackson Retirement Investment Annuity with the +Protect add-on living benefit is selected and five years later the account value is greater than what it was five years prior, then the contract has investment gains that will be locked in via a step-up. Moving forward, the annual withdrawal percentage, or the protected balance - the base which income is calculated from, will be increased to the new higher amount moving forward. In another five years, if the account value is up higher than the prior locked-in step-up amount, a new step-up will lock in based on the new higher amount. As the protected balance steps-up, the guaranteed income grows. This provides a low-cost benefit to help manage sequence-of-returns risk.

"Protected balance" is the Guaranteed Withdrawal Balance from which you take income.

Step-ups applied every 5th year if applicable, to your protected balance, not the account value. It's important to keep in mind the difference between your account value and protected balance, which this example illustrates. The protected balance is not a cash value, not available as a lump sum, and decreases on a dollar-for-dollar basis as you withdraw your guaranteed annual withdrawal amount (GAWA) or required minimum distribution (RMD).

This hypothetical example shows the total portfolio impact of allocating all investable assets into a non-annuity product. Over time, an initial investment of one million dollars with a 4% annual withdrawal starting at age 65 continues to maintain a downward trend in overall total portfolio value from the initial investment age of 60 through age 88, when the account is exhausted down to zero. This could be cause for concern if the client in this example lives beyond age 86 as their lifestyle will be drastically impacted due to no more investable assets to pull from.

This hypothetical example shows the income impact of allocating 20% of investable assets into an annuity with a living benefit and 80% into a non-annuity product. Over time, an initial investment of one million dollars with a 4% annual withdrawal starting at age 65 continues to provide more income each year until age 87. At age 87, there is less than five thousand dollars left to take from the non-annuity investment; however, there is still income generated from the annuity. This client does see a significant impact in lifestyle due to decrease in income; however, the client continues to receive about $8,000 in income annually from the annuity until death.
